It was New Years Eve, and so the clowns threw a party. They throw lots of parties. Any reason is a good reason for a party. Probably the most beautiful party I’ve ever in my life attended was their celebration of the Chinese New Year in Moscow, 2005. Most of these parties demand a creative contribution from whichever attendees feel like meeting such a demand. At the Chinese New Year party, we all made costumes of white. Recently celebrating the end of a run in London, they all brought drawings or photographs of the English capital city. To celebrate the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, they held the 2nd Annual Fool Film Festival (the first was held the previous year on April 1st). Many of the New Years revelers brought videos they had made while in Los Angeles. I brought one of my own, called Patterns & Prayers, and I also helped make this one. Vanya, Artiem, Karobuchka and Sasha had already chosen the song. I’m still not sure whether they got it off the Shantel Bucovina Club Mixtape Volume 1 or off the Borat soundtrack, neither would surprise me. They wanted to do a shadowdance to it, (you know, in silhouette, like the iPod commercials used to be?) which isn’t so hard: just hang up a sheet, shine a bright light at it, and stand between the light and the sheet. I offered my expert services as an editor. Unfortunately, during the few hours they had gotten permission to use the stage, I had a work appointment and couldn’t be there. When I got to the theater that night, I asked them how the shooting had gone. All four of them individually told me (in various shades of broken english and expert gesticulation) how they didn’t think it went so well, there was this problem and that problem, nobody agreed on anything, it was a big mess, and it probably would turn out poorly. I bring this up in order to elucidate an important and often hidden ingredient of cinematic alchemy. You see, these negative opinions were those of four theater professionals. One of their performances lasts an hour and a half, including an intermission, and remains watchable the entire time. However, when making movies, two seconds can be a valuable piece of footage even if the stuff right before and after it sucks. When they saw this finished video, they all looked at me like I was some sort of magician. Of course, I had been looking at them as such for a long time.
